ARCH 1142 - Architectural Communications Reflective Paragraph

Reflection on the Course

After attending three courses throughout the semester I felt there is more to architectural representation than just technical drawings.

Firstly with architecture in motion it really taught me that architectural spaces could be represented in film as well through many images. It could also be used to show circulation through space as well as movement of different objects within the space. It is a very entertaining and exotic way to present ones architectural space.

Architectural drawing opened up a new way of looking at drawings as we were taught to take the floor plans and section and elevation from a building and asked to give it a different perspective in it. Before from my knowledge all representations through drawings could only be seen in a technical point of view however after taking the workshop I learnt that many different variations could be applied to the drawings. Examples of these variations is the introduction of colour and also the introduction of different medias like charcoal ink and endless medias which could be use to present a drawing. I took from the architecture in motion, the idea of three dimensional and two dimensional relationship through the photos in the stop motion film and modelling into architectural drawing by creating a model like axonometric and combining it with a two dimensional floor plan. Through this it opened up a new pathway for architectural drawing.

Fluid thought with architecture was a new experience for me as before I have never attempted to combing charcoal with architectural structures. The idea of fluidity greatly resembles the ideas that I learnt from the architecture in motion workshop and through that I learnt how a space could change with different elements like light and objects and movement. I also took into fluid thoughts from architectural drawings are the perspective drawings and axonometric. In a way it is like the continuation of architectural drawing but with a great focus on charcoal presentation and because of this I was able to pass through the workshop and pick up new techniques and idea for the display of structures.

I find the workshop of this course very beneficial and it taught me that architecture isnt only about technical representation and introduced me to many other ideas like through films and use of different media. I greatly appreciated this opportunity and hopefully will be able to use the material I learnt from this course to my future years and my career as an architect.

The groups drawings for final presentation

Our collaborative drawing

The marks of rips could be seen to show a volumetric touch on the drawings

The theme of this drawing is to show a right angle pan of the surrounding and we did it through the symmetrical layout because it will give a sense of repetitiveness through the illustration. It is also done through the chaotic repetition of fans on the ceiling. The idea of symmetry is also emphasised through the balance of light and dark of the shadows and light through the windows.

Paragraph Drawing

The idea of this exercise is for us to interpret the paragraph a group member has written and communicate that paragraph through a charcoal illustration.

Sydney Opera House Drawings

The idea behind this drawing is to show movement in space. It happens when we were moving from location to location and trying to capture the image as we travel alongside the Sydney Opera House. The methods in blending the drawings together were ideas like transparency and overlapping. This will create a drawing with movement and depth showing the fluidity of a certain structure.

Sydney Opera House Drawings

Another aspect we were trying to achieve through this exercise is the ability to capture the difference of light and dark in a environment. Light and darkness in an image show fluidity because of the idea of time. The casting of shadows and light show that other than it being just a stationary structure time is also changing the building every second. From day to night and night to day it goes through many different appearances and through the sketching of the building through time we were able to see the fluidity of the structure and life within it.

Still Life Objects

The sketching of still life objects allow us to capture clearly a certain section of the object. However the images were altered through the movement of the objects after we captured the image and in order to show movement we have to convey the idea through the methods we were introduced to during the opera house exercise.

Landscape Sketching

Through this exercise the sense of scale is emphasised as we were told to enlarge a certain component in the landscape and blend it into the landscape.

Tea Cup Exercise

The exercise was to familiarise us with the idea of section, plan and elevation and allow us to interpret different methods of presenting these drawings

3D Perspective drawings

This exercise is an introduction on how we should present perspective drawings of our houses and what style we could incorporate into the drawing so that it could communicate the idea

Floor Plans and Elevation

Final Presentation Drawing

For this drawing what I really want to convey is the idea of the interconnection between volumetric and planar space. Therefore I decided to combine the idea of axonometric and floor plans by extruding the floor plans from the actual building. This will bond the three dimension axonometric with the two dimensional section, floor plan and elevation. The product is the
building will seem more realistic through the drawings.

Part of the Story Board for the Stop motion film

The storyboard is used to display all the photos that will be included in my final film.

Research regarding William Kentridge's approach to stop motion films and images showing the process and development of this film. The process of making the film started from preliminary sketches during class when we had to think of different scenarios which we could use to base our film upon it. From there we started taking real life photos which will show the flow of the film. The final step is manipulating the photos with drawings and modeling. The photos were then emphasised by the insertion of different communication medias in order to present the narritive which was included in my film.
